2,4-D Isooctyl ester (also called 2-ethylhexyl ester) is a selective, systemic herbicide used for post-emergence control of broadleaf weeds in crops like cereals (wheat, barley, corn, rice), sugarcane, pastures, and turfgrass.
It effectively controls:
Annual & perennial broadleaf weeds (e.g., pigweed, lambsquarters, ragweed, thistles, dandelions, clover, bindweed).
Brush & woody plants in non-crop areas.
Cereals (Wheat, Barley, Corn, Rice)
Rate: 300-600 g a.i./ha (varies by weed pressure).
Timing: Post-emergence, when weeds are young (2-5 leaf stage).
Sugarcane & Pastures
Rate: 500-1000 g a.i./ha for tough perennials.
Avoid grazing for 7-14 days after application.
Turf & Lawns
Used in mixes for dandelion, clover, and plantain control.
Higher rates (1-2 kg a.i./ha) for brush control.
Some formulations approved for floating weeds (check local regulations).
Often tank-mixed with other herbicides (e.g., glyphosate, dicamba, MCPA) for broader weed control.
Use non-ionic surfactants (NIS) or crop oil concentrates (COC) to enhance efficacy.
Better rainfastness than amine salts (less wash-off).
Stronger on tough weeds (e.g., bindweed, thistles) than 2,4-D amine.
Lower volatility than butyl ester, reducing drift risk.
Drift risk: Use coarse sprays, avoid windy conditions.
Crop sensitivity: Can harm cotton, grapes, tomatoes, and legumes (dicot crops).
Resistance management: Rotate with other MOA (e.g., ALS inhibitors, glyphosate).
