Lufenuron is a lipophilic benzoylurea insecticide and a chitin synthesis inhibitor that can used for flea and fish lice control. Lufenuron inhibits moulting of arthropods.
The combination of Methoxyfenozide (an insect growth regulator) and Lufenuron (a chitin synthesis inhibitor) provides enhanced control of lepidopteran pests through dual growth disruption mechanisms. This mixture is particularly effective in cotton, vegetables, and row crops where caterpillar resistance is a concern.
Helicoverpa armigera (Cotton bollworm)
Spodoptera spp. (Armyworms, Fall armyworm)
Plutella xylostella (Diamondback moth)
Pectinophora gossypiella (Pink bollworm)
Chilo suppressalis (Rice stem borer)
Some beetles and coleopteran larvae (via Lufenuron's chitin inhibition)
Active Ingredient | Target System | Effect on Insects |
---|---|---|
Methoxyfenozide | Ecdysone receptor agonist | Premature molting → lethal deformity |
Lufenuron | Chitin synthesis inhibitor | Blocks exoskeleton formation → death during molting |
Synergistic Effect:
Attacks two different growth pathways (cuticle formation + molting hormone mimicry)
Overcomes resistance in pests resistant to single-mode insecticides
Cotton (bollworm complex, pink bollworm)
Soybeans & Corn (armyworms, earworms)
Vegetables (tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower against fruit borers/DBM)
Fruits (mango, citrus for stem borers)
Stored Grains (limited use against moth larvae)
Resistance-breaking - Dual modes reduce pest adaptation risk
Ovicidal/Larvicidal - Lufenuron affects eggs; Methoxyfenozide kills larvae
Long residual activity - Lufenuron persists on leaf surfaces
IPM-compatible - Lower mammalian toxicity than neurotoxins
Formulation Example:
10% Methoxyfenozide + 5% Lufenuron SC
Application Rate:
Foliar Spray: 0.4-0.6 mL/L water (200-300 L/ha)
Timing: Early egg hatch or young larval stages
Reapplication: 10-14 day intervals if pressure persists
Critical Notes:
Rainfastness: Lufenuron binds well to foliage; re-spray if rain occurs <6hr after application
Tank-Mix Compatibility: Avoid alkaline mixtures (pH >8 degrades Lufenuron)
Non-target Effects:
Toxic to aquatic arthropods (use buffer zones near water)
Moderate bee risk (apply during non-foraging hours)
Resistance Management:
Rotate with diamides (chlorantraniliprole) or spinosyns (spinetoram)
Mixture | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|
Methoxyfenozide + Bt | Organic-compatible, safer for bees | UV-sensitive, shorter residual |
Methoxyfenozide + Emamectin | Broad-spectrum, fast knockdown | High toxicity to aquatic life |
Methoxyfenozide + Lufenuron | Long residual, resistance management | Slower kill than neurotoxins |
This mixture excels in crops with persistent lepidopteran pressure where resistance to single-mode insecticides (e.g., pyrethroids) is suspected. Its growth disruption focus makes it a strategic choice in IPM programs, though it requires proper timing (early infestations) for maximum efficacy.
For best results:
Use with sticker/spreader adjuvants to enhance Lufenuron's rainfastness
Combine with monitoring (pheromone traps) to time applications accurately
