Applications

Thiacloprid, a chloronicotinyl insecticide, is targeted chiefly to control aphid pest species in orchards and vegetables[1]. Thiacloprid destabilizes DNA. Thiacloprid changes the structure and stability of DNA through binding into the minor groove by hydrophobic or hydrogen interactions[2].

Flonicamid (IKI220) is a novel systemic insecticide with selective activity against hemipterous pests. The main insecticidal mechanism of flonicamid is starvation based on the inhibition of stylet penetration to plant tissues.

The combination of Thiacloprid (a neonicotinoid) and Flonicamid (a selective feeding blocker) provides dual-action control against sucking pests with complementary modes of action, reducing resistance risks while being relatively safe for beneficial insects.

1. Target Pests

This mixture is highly effective against sap-feeding insects, including:

Primary Targets

  • Aphids (Aphis gossypii, Myzus persicae, Rhopalosiphum maidis)

  • Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci, Trialeurodes vaporariorum)

  • Thrips (Thrips tabaci, Frankliniella occidentalis)

  • Jassids/Leafhoppers (Empoasca spp., Nephotettix spp.)

  • Mealybugs (Planococcus citri, Phenacoccus solenopsis)

Secondary Effects

  • Suppresses virus transmission (e.g., yellow vein mosaic virus in okra) by controlling vector pests.

2. Mode of Action

Active Ingredient Target System Effect on Insects
Thiacloprid Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist Nervous system overstimulation → paralysis & death
Flonicamid Inhibits stylet penetration & feeding Blocks insect feeding → starvation & reduced reproduction

Synergistic Benefits:

  • Quick knockdown (Thiacloprid) + long-term suppression (Flonicamid).

  • Low bee toxicity (Thiacloprid is safer than other neonicotinoids like imidacloprid).

  • Non-harmful to predators (Flonicamid is selective, sparing ladybugs & lacewings).

3. Application Crops

  • Cotton (aphids, whiteflies, jassids)

  • Vegetables (tomato, chilli, brinjal, okra - for whiteflies & thrips)

  • Fruits (mango, citrus, grapes - mealybugs & aphids)

  • Cereals (wheat, barley - aphids)

  • Ornamentals & Greenhouses (thrips, whiteflies)

4. Advantages of the Mixture

Resistance management - Dual modes reduce pest adaptation.
Reduced bee risk (Thiacloprid has lower bee toxicity than imidacloprid).
Systemic + contact action (Thiacloprid moves in plants; Flonicamid works topically).
IPM-friendly - Compatible with biological control agents.

5. Recommended Dosage & Application

Formulation Example:

  • Thiacloprid 12% + Flonicamid 6% WG

Application Method:

  • Foliar spray: 0.4-0.6 g/L water (300-500 L/ha)

  • Soil drench (for Thiacloprid systemic uptake in greenhouses)

Timing:

  • Apply at first sign of infestation.

  • Reapply every 10-14 days if needed.

Critical Notes:

  • Avoid spraying during flowering (while Thiacloprid is safer, precaution is still needed).

  • Use adjuvants (sticker-spreaders improve Flonicamid's rainfastness).

6. Precautions & Limitations

Not effective against chewing pests (caterpillars, beetles).
Moderate toxicity to aquatic life (avoid runoff into water bodies).
PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval): Typically 7 days for vegetables.

7. Comparison to Alternatives

Mixture Pros Cons
Thiacloprid + Flonicamid Bee-safer, IPM-compatible Narrow spectrum (sucking pests only)
Imidacloprid + Beta-cyfluthrin Broad-spectrum High bee toxicity
Flonicamid + Pymetrozine Excellent anti-feeding effect Slower knockdown

8. Conclusion

This mixture is ideal for sustainable pest management in cotton, vegetables, and fruits where sucking pests threaten yield and virus transmission. Its balanced efficacy and safety make it a top choice for IPM programs, especially where pollinators are a concern.

For best results:

  • Rotate with spirotetramat or afidopyropen to prevent resistance.

  • Combine with yellow sticky traps for monitoring.
