Applications

Thiacloprid, a chloronicotinyl insecticide, is targeted chiefly to control aphid pest species in orchards and vegetables[1]. Thiacloprid destabilizes DNA. Thiacloprid changes the structure and stability of DNA through binding into the minor groove by hydrophobic or hydrogen interactions[2].

With high efficiency and wide spectrum, spirotetramat can effectively prevent and control various stin-sucking mouth pests, such as aphids, thrips, woodlice, mealy bugs, mealy lice and scale insects. The main crops available include cotton, soybeans, citrus, tropical fruit trees, nuts, grapes, hops, potatoes and vegetables. Research shows that it has good selectivity to important beneficial insects such as ladybird, aphid fly and parasitic wasp.

The combination of Thiacloprid (a neonicotinoid) and Spirotetramat (a tetramic acid derivative) provides dual-action systemic control against a broad spectrum of sucking pests, offering both knockdown and long-lasting suppression. This mixture is particularly effective in cotton, vegetables, and fruit crops where resistance management is critical.

1. Target Pests

This mixture is highly effective against sucking pests, including:

Primary Targets

  • Aphids (Aphis gossypii, Myzus persicae)

  • Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci, Trialeurodes vaporariorum)

  • Jassids/Leafhoppers (Empoasca spp., Amrasca spp.)

  • Mealybugs (Planococcus citri, Phenacoccus solenopsis)

  • Scale insects (Aonidiella aurantii, Icerya purchasi)

Secondary Effects

  • Controls nymphs and adults while disrupting egg development (ovicidal effect via Spirotetramat).

  • Reduces honeydew secretion, preventing sooty mold.

2. Mode of Action

Active Ingredient Target System Effect on Insects
Thiacloprid Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist Nervous system overstimulation → paralysis & death
Spirotetramat Lipid biosynthesis inhibitor (ACCase inhibitor) Disrupts growth → prevents molting & reproduction

Synergistic Benefits:

  • Quick knockdown (Thiacloprid) + long-term suppression (Spirotetramat's systemic & translaminar activity).

  • Effective against all life stages (eggs, nymphs, adults).

  • Low bee toxicity (Thiacloprid is safer than other neonicotinoids like imidacloprid).

3. Application Crops

  • Cotton (aphids, whiteflies, jassids)

  • Vegetables (tomato, brinjal, chilli - whiteflies & aphids)

  • Fruits (citrus, mango, grapes - mealybugs & scales)

  • Oilseeds (mustard, sunflower - aphids)

  • Ornamentals & Greenhouses (whiteflies, scales)

4. Advantages of the Mixture

Resistance management - Dual modes reduce pest adaptation.
Systemic + translaminar movement (Spirotetramat moves within the plant).
Long residual effect (up to 21 days for Spirotetramat).
IPM-friendly - Compatible with biocontrol agents (low impact on predators).

5. Recommended Dosage & Application

Formulation Example:

  • Thiacloprid 12% + Spirotetramat 12% SC

Application Method:

  • Foliar spray: 0.5-0.75 mL/L water (300-400 L/ha)

  • Soil drench (for Spirotetramat's systemic uptake in perennial crops)

Timing:

  • Apply at early infestation stages.

  • Reapply every 15-21 days (Spirotetramat's residual lasts longer).

Critical Notes:

  • Best applied in vegetative growth stage (Spirotetramat needs time to translocate).

  • Avoid spraying under high UV (Thiacloprid degrades faster in sunlight).

6. Precautions & Limitations

Not effective against chewing pests (caterpillars, beetles).
Moderate toxicity to aquatic life (avoid runoff into water bodies).
PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval): Typically 7-14 days (check label).

7. Comparison to Alternatives

Mixture Pros Cons
Thiacloprid + Spirotetramat Long residual, bee-safer Slower initial knockdown
Imidacloprid + Acetamiprid Fast-acting High bee toxicity
Flonicamid + Spirotetramat Excellent anti-feeding No nervous system action

8. Conclusion

This mixture is ideal for crops with persistent sucking pest infestations, offering both immediate and prolonged control. Its bee-friendly profile and resistance management benefits make it a top choice for IPM programs in cotton, vegetables, and fruits.

For best results:

  • Rotate with flonicamid or pymetrozine to prevent resistance.

  • Combine with sticky traps for monitoring.
