Applications

Fenbutatin Oxide is used to control the following: Mites, aphids, thrips, mealybugs, whiteflies and scales, although it was originally created as a miticide (acaricide). It is applied only to agricultural sites, as residential use is not permitted. Fenbutatin Oxide may be applied 2-4 times per year at a rate of 1.25-2lbs active ingredient per Acre. The estimated application of Fenbutatin Oxide for years 1989-1991 in the United States was 361, 000-522, 000 lbs. There are three application methods for Fenbutatin Oxide including airblast, groundboom or aerially.

Pyridaben is a non-systmic insecticide and acaricide, Rapid knock-down and long residual activity. It is a METI acaricide that inhibits mitochondrial electron transport at complex I (METI; Ki = 0.36 nmol/mg protein in rat brain mitochondria). Pyridaben is active against a variety of mites, inducing 100% mortality of C. malaccensis, D. farina, and T. putrescentia when administered via filter paper contact at doses of 25, 100, and 200 mg/m3, respectively. Active against all the developing stqages, especially against the larval and nymph stages. Control of red spiders on cotton, soya bean, fruit trees, ornamentals and vegetables at 5-20g/hl or 100-300kg/ha.

The combination of Fenbutatin Oxide + Pyridaben is a highly effective miticide mixture used for controlling resistant spider mite populations in various crops. Here's a detailed application guide:

1. Mode of Action & Target Pests

Fenbutatin Oxide

  • Chemical Class: Organotin miticide

  • Mode of Action: Inhibits oxidative phosphorylation in mites (nerve poison)

  • Target Stage: Effective against all motile stages (nymphs, adults) but not eggs

  • Key Strength: Excellent for resistance management (low cross-resistance risk)

Pyridaben

  • Chemical Class: Pyridazinone (METI inhibitor, Group 21A)

  • Mode of Action: Disrupts mitochondrial electron transport

  • Target Stage: Kills eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults

  • Key Strength: Quick knockdown + residual control

Ideal For:
Two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae)
European red mite (Panonychus ulmi)
Resistance-prone mite populations

2. Recommended Crops

  • Fruits: Apples, grapes, citrus, strawberries

  • Vegetables: Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers

  • Ornamentals: Roses, greenhouse plants

  • Field Crops: Cotton, soybeans

(Check local registration - some countries restrict organotins like Fenbutatin Oxide)

3. Application Guidelines

Dosage (Typical)

Product Example Rate (per ha) Water Volume
Fenbutatin Oxide 50% WP 300-500 g 500-1000 L
Pyridaben 20% SC 400-600 mL 500-1000 L
Premix (e.g., Fenbutatin 25% + Pyridaben 15% SC) 800-1200 mL 500-1000 L

Key Timing

  • Apply at first mite detection (before webbing appears)

  • Best results at moderate temps (15-25°C) - Fenbutatin works slower in cold

  • Reapply every 10-14 days if needed (max 2-3 applications/season)

Spray Method

  • Use high-pressure sprayer (≥300 psi) for canopy penetration

  • Ensure underside leaf coverage - critical for contact miticides

  • Add non-ionic surfactant if hard water is used

4. Advantages of the Mixture

Complete life-stage control: Pyridaben (eggs) + Fenbutatin (mobile stages)
Resistance management: Two distinct MoAs (Group 12B + 21A)
Long residual effect: Fenbutatin provides 14-21 days protection

5. Precautions & Limitations

  • Phytotoxicity: Rare but test on few plants first (some grape varieties sensitive)

  • Bee Toxicity: Pyridaben is highly toxic to bees - apply at dusk/dawn

  • Pre-Harvest Intervals (PHI):

    • Fenbutatin Oxide: 14-30 days (varies by crop)

    • Pyridaben: 7-21 days

  • Resistance Risk: Rotate with non-METI miticides (e.g., clofentezine, etoxazole)

6. Resistance Management Strategy

Rotate with these MoA groups:

  • Group 10 (e.g., Etoxazole - egg inhibitor)

  • Group 6 (e.g., Hexythiazox - growth regulator)

  • Group 25 (e.g., Bifenazate - neural toxin)

7. Example Commercial Product

Vendex® 50WP (Fenbutatin) + Sanmite® 20SC (Pyridaben):

  • Mix Ratio: 500 g + 500 mL per ha

  • REI: 24 hours

  • Rainfastness: 2 hours (Fenbutatin), 4 hours (Pyridaben)
