Applications

Clothianidin is a neonicotinoid insecticide. Clothianidin shows excellent long-term control effect in small doses against various insect pests such as Coleoptera, Thysanoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Homoptera, Heteroptera, Orthoptera and Isoptera families. Clothianidin has various application methods and high safety for crops.

Pymetrozine is a feeding inhibitor of Homoptera, in preventing transmission of cauliflower mosaic caulimovirus by the aphid species Myzus persicae (Sulzer).

The mixture of Pymetrozine and Clothianidin is a combination of two active ingredients with different modes of action, making it an effective tool for controlling a wide range of insect pests, particularly in agricultural settings. Below is an overview of its application:

1. Target Pests

This mixture is primarily used to control:

  • Sucking pests such as aphids, whiteflies, leafhoppers, and planthoppers.

  • Soil-dwelling pests like root aphids and certain beetle larvae (due to Clothianidin's systemic activity).

2. Crops

It is commonly applied to:

  • Vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers)

  • Fruits (e.g., citrus, grapes, apples)

  • Field crops (e.g., rice, corn, cotton)

  • Ornamentals (e.g., flowers, shrubs)

3. Mode of Action

  • Pymetrozine: A selective feeding inhibitor that disrupts the feeding behavior of sucking pests, causing them to starve.

  • Clothianidin: A neonicotinoid insecticide that acts as a systemic and contact poison, targeting the nervous system of insects.

4. Application Methods

  • Foliar spray: Direct application to the leaves and stems of plants.

  • Soil application: Applied to the soil for systemic uptake by plant roots (especially for Clothianidin).

  • Seed treatment: Coating seeds with the mixture to protect young plants from early pest infestations.

5. Dosage and Mixing

  • Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific formulation and crop.

  • Typical application rates range from 100-300 mL/ha for foliar sprays, depending on the pest pressure and crop type.

  • Always mix the product with water according to the label instructions and ensure proper agitation during application.

6. Advantages

  • Broad-spectrum control: Effective against both sucking and chewing pests.

  • Systemic activity: Clothianidin provides long-lasting protection by moving through the plant tissues.

  • Reduced resistance risk: The combination of two modes of action helps delay the development of insect resistance.

7. Precautions

  • Environmental impact: Clothianidin is toxic to bees and other pollinators. Avoid application during flowering or when bees are active.

  • Resistance management: Rotate with other insecticide classes to prevent resistance development.

  • Safety: Wear protective clothing (gloves, mask, goggles) during handling and application.

  • Pre-harvest interval (PHI): Adhere to the recommended PHI to ensure food safety.

8. Regulatory Considerations

  • Check local regulations regarding the use of neonicotinoids (e.g., Clothianidin), as some regions have restrictions due to environmental concerns.

This mixture is a powerful tool for integrated pest management (IPM) when used responsibly and in accordance with label instructions. Always consult the product label and local agricultural extension services for specific guidance.
